The world-renowned, 7-day Galway Races take place annually at the Galway Racecourse. The first races were held in 1864 and as part of Pope John Paull II visit Ireland in 1979, he celebrated mass on the racecourse for 280,000 people. Attending Ballybrit Racecourse in 1869 were 40,000 people in 2 days and has now grown to over 145,000 during the annual Galway Races.
A number of events take place during the week, this includes Gather Your Tribe day, Sports and Social day, Galway Plate Day, the Guinness Galway Hurdle (also known as Ladies Day), Friday’s Most Stylish and Weekend Family Fun.
