The Grainger Market
Another world-famous indoor farmers market, The English Market was built in 1788 and is still fully operational as a fresh produce market to this day. Visitors can take in the architectural beauty of the market’s interior, from the arched wooden roof to the intricate banister details, or browse the myriad of food stalls within.
There’s plenty of space for groups to grab a bite to eat and sit, or stock up on some takeaway artisan food to bring on a picnic outdoors.
Eldon Square
This fully indoor shopping centre is on the doorstep of the Maldron hotel Newcastle. From kids clothes to jewellery, to stationery and shoes, there’s something for everyone inside. Stop and refresh with coffee and cake or treat yourself to a hair makeover or new nails.
The centre has hundreds of high street retailers including Next, John Lewis, Adidas and Apple as well as a restaurant quarter with more than 20 eateries to choose from if you fancy staying late.
Royal Quays
Designer deals galore over at this outlet centre. Big names such as Next, Body shop and Nike stand within the centre offering high-end products at discount prices. Good news for the purses! With coffee shops, eateries and even a play area for the kids, Royal quays is a fab day out.
Newcastle Quayside Market
Every Sunday morning Newcastle Quayside comes to life with this weekly market. A city tradition that has been going on for over 30 years holds host to a vibrant mix of stalls. Handmade leather good, ceramic decorations, local artists prints and Newcastle food products are all on show.
Topped off with some fantastic street food vendors and a lively busker or two, this is a great way to blow away the cobwebs on a Newcastle morning.
Newcastle Racecourse
If ponies and prosecco are more your sport of choice Newcastle racecourse is located just 5 miles outside of the city centre and is one of the UK’s busiest racecourses. Hosting over 60 meets a year including the renowned Plate day and ladies’ day, this a great addition to your Newcastle break.
St. James Park
Only a 5 minute walk from the Hotel sit the iconic St James’ Park, the home of Newcastle United Football club. The stadium plays host to all of Newcastle’s home games as well as one off events with gigs from the likes of Sam Fender and Ed Sheeran.
2023 sees St James’ Park play host to it’s first Champions league games in 20 years, welcoming Borussia Dortmund, Paris St Germain and AC Milan to Newcastle.
Newcastle Eagels
Maldron Hotel Newcastle are a proud sponsor of our local basketball team – The Newcastle Eagles. The team are currently the most successful team in British Basketball history and have their very own stadium, The Vertu Motors arena, which is a short walk from the hotel. Newcastle Falcons
If Football isn’t your thing, Newcastle is also home to the fantastic Newcastle Falcons who play at their Kingston Park ground. Standing tickets are available as well as a great selection of hospitality packages to make your visit extra special.
Gateshead International Stadium
Gateshead International Stadium is the third-largest sporting venue in Tyne and Wear and the North East’s only IAAF-standard athletics stadium. Home to Gateshead FC, Gateshead Harriers Athletics Club, Gateshead Storm Rugby Club, and the Gateshead Angels Netball Club.
They’ve hosted Olympians and pop royalty, and seen five world records broken in track and field. Gateshead stadium is only an 8-minute drive or just two stops on the metro and you’re there!

Utilita Arena
The Utilita Arena, formerly Metro Radio Arena, is a sports and entertainment venue ranked as 7th of the world’s busiest venues by Pollstar magazine. It is the largest concert and exhibition venue in the North East. The Utilita Arena is located a 15-minute stroll from Maldron Hotel Newcastle.
O2 Academy
The former picture hall only 3 minutes’ walk from the hotel hosts a medley of fantastic live music events and shows holding up to 2000 people. From a huge range of amazing cover bands to up-and-coming Indie artists couple with some big names in pop, the 02 is a must-visit when you’re in the area.
Gateshead Quays
A brand-new multimillion development is on its way to Gateshead, and only a 15 minute walk from the Maldron Hotel.
The 10-acre site which sits directly opposite the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and between the area’s most iconic buildings, Sage Gateshead and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art is planned to include a12,500 seat entertainment arena, conference and exhibition centre, bars and restaurants, creating a vibrant new destination on the waterfront.
Sage Gateshead
The stunning concert and entertainment venue in Newcastle opened in 2004 and is famous for hosting a wide range of acts. The venue has many seasonal events on all year round, including Classical Season, Gateshead Jazz, Brass in Concert, Newcastle International Chamber Music Series, Silver Programme Music Festival, TUSK Festival and many family events that are creative and engaging.
Newcastle City Hall
Newcastle City Hall, also known as O2 City Hall Newcastle, was opened in 1927 and has a capacity of over 2,000 guests. It has hosted various popular artists ranging from music to comedy acts. Notable acts have performed here such as The Byrds, Lindisfarne, Rammstein and Jacka.
Easily accessible, Newcastle City Hall is just 0.6 miles or a 12 minutes’ walk from Maldron Hotel Newcastle.
Mr Mulligans Space Golf
Only 2 minutes from the hotel find yourself lost in the interstellar world of Mr Mulligans, minigolf with a twist enjoy a range of courses to test your skills and get some family competition going. Choose from 3 galactic themed 9-hole courses and refuel at the café.

Much more than just ten pin bowling, Lane 7 has a range of family activities under one stylish roof. Centre for Life
The centre for life is a must do for families visiting Newcastle. Directly next to Central station, it’s bursting at the seams with information, activities and wonderful experiments. With a curiosity zone, a brain zone and even a young explorer’s area for the little ones you can spend a full day exploring. The Centre is also the locations for Newcastle’s winter Ice rink running from November to February.

Go Ape, located in the charming village Maften, is just 15 miles from Newcastle City. This outdoor adventure park is a great day out for families who are looking to be active while also having plenty of competitive fun. You can swing through the trees on rope swings and fly down zip lines while taking in some of the beautiful surrounding scenery.

Newcastle Castle
In the centre of Newcastle city stands the tower of the structure which gave the city its name. The castle Keep and its gatehouse were once part of a much grander structure, and home to Reigning Kings and imprisoned villains. Today visitors can walk the halls following guiding exhibits and take in some breath-taking views of the city.

Tynemouth Priory
About 20 minutes east of the city, you’ll get to experience the amazing Northern coastline with the Tynemouth Priory remains dominating the headland. Discover its story as it moves from Anglo-Saxon settlement to a monastery to a coastal defence. Finish off the day with some traditional fish and chips or enjoy a picnic on the beach

Newcastle Cathedral
There is no better place to get a feel for the history of the city than Newcastle Cathedral. Located in the heart of Old Newcastle this beautifully designed mediaeval church is filled with plenty of historical monuments, sculptures and stained glass each playing its part in describing interesting people and events of importance to the history of the city. Newcastle Cathedral is open 7 days a week and entry is free, a donation of £5 per person is suggested.
Beamish Open-Air Mueseum
Just 20 minutes out of the city centre will transport you back in time at the world famous Beamish open-air museum, take the tram or walk along the cobbles to the 1900’s town and pit village, explore the Edwardian Rowley train station or take a trip to the 1940’s far. With fun for all ages this is not to be missed. Also pay once and get a year’s pass so you can head back on your next visit.
Discovery Museum
Immerse yourself in the history of North Tyneside told through permanent displays and visiting exhibitions. Come face to face with Turbina, Charles Parson’s iconic steam powered ship as you enter and climb the floors to find More maritime history and even a mock model of the River Tyne for the little ones to play in. The top floor is the home of scientist discovery with experiments, tricks and an interactive maze.
The discovery museum is free entry but welcomes donations for their upkeep.
Metro Centre
Since its refurbishment in the mid-2000s, Metro Centre has been completely revamped and has access ramps reserved for public transport. It’s connected directly to Gateshead Metro station by X66 and Newcastle Station via the city centre.
Newcastle Airport
Newcastle International Airport is just outside the city centre and within 15 minutes taxi from Maldron Hotel Newcastle. The airport carried 5.4m passengers in 2018 alone, the highest number of passengers the airport has ever seen. For its second year, Newcastle Airport was awarded ASQ Award – Best Airport in Europe for its size.
