Dublin City Break Itinerary

We would be delighted to welcome you to Dublin city, most famous for its deep cultural heritage and world-renowned hospitality. Our capital city is small by global standards but can be conveniently explored on foot, via public transport networks or the ever-popular Dublin City bike scheme. Maldron Hotel Kevin Street is perfectly situated in the heart of Dublin city for all our guests to experience the capital’s most famous architectural highlights, museums, and cultural activities.

If you only have 3 days in Dublin, it will be tight, but we have a suggested itinerary for you with something for everyone included.

Day 1 - Architecture & History

Coffee in hand from our Red Bean Roastery, take a short stroll to St Patrick’s Cathedral, founded in 1191. It is Ireland’s national cathedral, the largest church in Ireland and is said to be where St Patrick himself baptised Christian converts. Heading towards the river Liffey which runs through the middle of the city you will find Christ Church Cathedral which also houses Dublinia, a Viking heritage museum.

Next on the tour, no visit to the city would be complete without a trip to Trinity College, alumni include Oscar Wilde and Bram Stoker. Founded in 1592 it is home to The Book of Kells which was written in 1661 and the old library which is home to over 2000 historic texts. Five minutes from Trinity College your next stop will be Dublin Castle, erected in the 13th century on the site of a historic settlement. The castle was the HQ for the English and British administration in Ireland. Following Irish independence, it became home to major government departments.

Just 3.5 km from the city centre visitors can experience guided tours of Kilmainham Gaol Prison which opened in 1796 and was a working prison until 1924 housing men women and children for a variety of crimes from stealing food right up to membership of the Irish Republican Movement. Some of the main attractions can be busy at peak times so we would suggest an hour to an hour and a half when planning your visits to enjoy the full experience.

Day 2 - Literature & Culture

After a hearty Vitality Breakfast, start the day at The Little Museum of Dublin, just beside St Stephen’s Green, which is a hidden gem for those interested in how Dublin and its people lived their lives over the past century. When you exit you will be at the top of Kildare Street which is home to The Irish Parliament Dail Eireann.

On the opposite side, you will find The National Museum of Ireland and close by the National Library which has a permanent WB Yeats exhibition. Very close by at the end of Kildare Street you will find The National Gallery of Ireland which is home to a fine collection of Irish art and visiting European collections from the middle ages to the present day. Literature historians will also find a statue to Oscar Wilde in nearby Merrion Square across the street from the house he used to live in.

Finally, we would recommend a visit to Dublin’s EPIC – The Irish Emigration Museum which is situated in the city’s docklands where you can visit 20 separate themed galleries and a family history centre if you are seeking advice and resources in tracking down your Irish routes.

Day 3 - Parks & Recreation

We would recommend a visit to the Phoenix Park; it is the largest enclosed public park in a capital city in Europe. Open to the public in 1747 it is also home to Dublin Zoo, Victorian flower gardens and Áras an Uachtaráin the official residence and workplace of the President of Ireland.

Less than a mile away is Ireland’s top tourist attraction Guinness Storehouse. In addition to pulling your own pint and sampling “the black stuff” with panoramic views of Dublin city in the Gravity Bar, you can also learn about the history of the Guinness Family and their brewing story.

Crossing the River Liffey to the old Smithfield Market you can also visit The Jameson Distillery. Stroll along the banks of The River Liffey and cross back to the south side over the world renowned Ha’penny Bridge to discover the centre of music and culture “craic agus ceol” in Dublin’s Temple Bar.

Spoiled for choice in the Dublin 8 area, why not wind down with a relaxing tour of our neighbouring Teelings Distillery where you can sample a taste of world class whiskey or take a walk to The Dublin Liberties Distillery and enjoy a sip on some of the eccentric flavours inspired by the distilling history of the Liberties and our local community. Some of the main attractions can be busy at peak times so we would suggest an hour to an hour and a half when planning your visits to enjoy the full experience.

Finish off your day with a delicious 3-course meal served in our Grain & Grill Restaurant where our team will be happy to recommend dishes to suit all tastes.
