Parks, Mountains, Rivers & Sport: Outdoor Activities in Dublin

Who doesn’t love a good outdoor adventure? We know we do! Dublin may not be the first place you’d think of when it comes to all things outdoors, but guess what? You’re in for a treat! We’ll tell you about all our favourite outdoor activities. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or a Sunday stroller, you’re sure to find exactly what you’re looking for in Dublin!

Phoenix Park

Let’s start with the biggest enclosed public park in Europe! Home to the president of Ireland and Dublin Zoo, there’s so much to do in this gorgeous park. With stunning floral gardens, tea rooms, historic monuments and even prehistoric burial chambers, what will you explore first? Take a bike tour of the park for some extra exhilaration or enjoy a tandem ride for two.

Fun fact: Did you know that Dublin Zoo is one of the oldest in the world?

Rafting on the River Liffey

See the Liffey from a whole new perspective.  Check out this super invigorating rafting experience, 20 minutes from the city centre. Although you may not get gnarly waves like those in the west, there’s no reason that water-sport enthusiasts can’t enjoy some adrenaline-fueled fun here in Dublin.

City Kayaking

Can you keep up with the busy pace of the pedestrians on the banks? Check out the great views of the city from a fun and unique angle with a tour of the River Liffey by kayak? This is a safe adventure but will definitely get the blood flowing if you’re going against the wind! Be sure to wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet – just in case! Don’t fear, you’ll be provided with kayaks, paddles and life jackets, so all you’ll need is yourself and your camera! (We recommend you invest in a waterproof bag for your phone/camera if you’re planning on taking it with you.) The team are super friendly and know lots of fun facts about Dublin. They will also guide you up the river with great kayaking tips to help you.

Dún Laoghaire

Popular with Dubliners, Dún Laoghaire is a gorgeous town on the southside of the city. Take a stroll down the 2.6km East pier and enjoy an ice cream whilst looking out at the glittering marina. Watch the boats sail through the water or better yet, why not take off on a nautical adventure with Dublin Bay cruises. Take a trip to Howth, where you can take part in your next Dublin experience!

Be sure to check out People’s Park if you’re visiting Dún Laoghaire on a Sunday! There’s a great market from 11.00am – 4.00pm. There you’ll find handmade crafts, hot food, baked goods and artisan, seasonal food produce!

Howth Cliff Walk

This stunning peninsula is the perfect place to spend a weekend afternoon! See the Baily Lighthouse, the Martello Tower and the little island known as Ireland’s Eye. There are 4 possible routes to take at Howth, so it doesn’t matter which category of fitness you fall under! For the moderate walkers, check out the 6km cliff path loop. When you’ve finished, treat yourself to some traditional Irish fish and chips back at the lovely seaside town of Howth.

A view of Dublin from the Skyline tour of Croke Park

Ericsson Skyline Tour | Croke Park

Looking for a unique experience in Dublin City? Say no more! The Ericsson Skyline Tour is one of the best (and most quirky) ways to learn about the capital city! 17-storeys high, atop Dublin’s highest open-viewing rooftop walkway, you’ll see great panoramic views. On the iconic Dublin GAA stadium, take in the views while you learn some fun facts about the city.

Ticknock Hiking & Mountain Bike Trails

It’s not only the Wicklow mountains that are worth visiting. The nearby Dublin mountains can be reached by car in 30 minutes, from hotels in Dublin city centre. There are many marvellous activities to take part in, in these high green hills. One of our favourites is the Ticknock trails. With up to 10km of forest and spectacular views over Dublin city and bay, these moderate walking trails are a fun way to spend your day. For those a little more daring, there’s a mountain bike trail there too. Take your bike with you in the car (there’s a car park of course) or rent one when you get there!

National Botanic Gardens

Not to be missed is this sanctuary of beauty and serenity, nestled within the hustle and bustle of Dublin. Visit the beautiful gardens free of charge and take some time to admire the stunning historic glasshouses. Take a tour whilst there if you want to delve more into the plant collections and history of the gardens.

Wherever you go in Dublin, rest assured there’s a Maldron Hotel in Dublin nearby so you’ll always be close to the action.
