Summer in Glasgow: What’s On 2023

Warmer weather, brighter skies, and lots to look forward to. We have broken down the top things to do this summer in Glasgow.

June

Watch the Scottish Cup Final

Are you a big sports fan? Hampden Park, Scotland’s National Stadium, will host the Scottish Cup Final 2023 on Saturday 3rd June. Holding a maximum capacity of just over 51,000, this venue has hosted numerous memorable and career defining moments for some of the World’s biggest names in football. If you cannot get to the stadium to watch, it is the perfect chance to meet up with your mates and watch one of the biggest matches in Scottish football. Here at Maldron Glasgow, we will be showing the game for you to enjoy.

Rock out at a Gig

June is a great time for live music in the city. Elton John headlines the OVO Hydro on the 17th and 18th June on his highly-anticipated Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. There are sure to be a lot of sartorial nods to his catalogue of hits sighted on the streets of Glasgow, from Rocket Man to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Following that up, there are big names taking Bellahouston Park at the end of the month, including Muse (23rd June), Arctic Monkeys (25th June), and Guns ‘N’ Roses (27th June). Whether you are attending or not, there will be a definite buzz in the city’s bars and restaurants with concert-goers and those soaking up the atmosphere of summer in the city. Maldron Hotel Glasgow City is just over a 10-minute drive to Bellahouston Park, and around the same to the OVO Hydro.

Take a wander around West End and Glasgow Botanic Gardens

The West End of Glasgow is home to boutique retailers, independent coffee shops and some of the best restaurants in the city. Taking the afternoon to wander around Byres Road and surrounding areas will give you plenty to see and do. At the junction of Byres Road and Great Western Road, take a walk through the Botanic Gardens, especially beautiful as the summer season kicks off in June. There are pop up food vans selling ice creams to keep you cool and you can then enjoy a look round the glasshouses which are free to enter, the most famous being the Kibble Palace.
The West End is easily accessible from Maldron Hotel Glasgow City via the Glasgow Subway. The nearest Subway stop on Buchanan Street is just a 5-minute walk from us.

July

TRNSMT

Glasgow’s oldest park, Glasgow Green, comes alive in new ways in July in Glasgow, with the city’s now-staple music festival, TRNSMT taking place. From Friday 7th July-Sunday 9th July, festival-goers will enjoy performances from George Ezra, Niall Horan, Sam Fender, Kasabian, Aitch, Mimi Webb, The 1975, Royal Blood, Becky Hill, The Kooks and many more. The sun beating down, good tunes, and the World-famous Glasgow crowd makes for an unforgettable weekend for both the audience and the artists performing. It is not to be missed. Maldron Hotel Glasgow City is around a 15-minute drive to Glasgow Green – easy when you can book a taxi from our Reception.

The Burrell Collection

The Burrell Collection, located just under a 20 minutes’ drive away from Maldron Hotel Glasgow City, reopened last year after an extensive renovation, and there is a whole new interactive experience waiting to be enjoyed. From new digital displays to reinventing the presentation of their physical artefacts, the Burrell Collection is well worth a visit this summer. One of the highlights in its over 9,000-object collection is significant Chinese art, as well as stained glass and over 200 tapestries well-renowned as some of the finest in the World. Take a picnic with you and enjoy the serene surroundings of Pollok Country Park where the Burrell is nestled within, and finish the day off with a leisurely woodland walk.

Piping Live!

Piping Live! is one of the World’s largest bagpiping events held annually in Glasgow by the National Piping Centre. Bagpipes are a cultural symbol for all things Scottish, a defining feature of our country’s traditions and events. In 2023, Piping Live is celebrating its 20th anniversary, so there are sure to be some special performances and memorable moments to enjoy. With nine days of packed entertainment and a variety of performers, be part of the action from the 12th-20th August 2023.

Maldron Hotel Glasgow City is only a 4-minute walk from the National Piping Centre, making it the best choice for your stay to enjoy all that the festival has to offer.

BANKSY Exhibition

World-famous graffiti artist, Banksy, has brought his first solo exhibition in 14 years to Glasgow City Centre. CUT & RUN: 25 years card labour will run seven days a week until the 28th August at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA). Banksy chose this venue because the Duke of Wellingston statue, which stands outside GOMA and is affectionately adorned with a traffic cone on his head, is the artist’s “favourite work of art in the UK”. The exhibition allows no photography or videography but has received rave reviews as many slots are already sold out. Make the most of the culture in the city and add this to your itinerary this summer.
