Dublin Castle is steeped in history and considered to be one of Ireland’s most important buildings. It was built in 13th century on the site of an old Viking settlement and it functioned as the centre of British rule in Ireland for over 700 years. Dublin castle is now primarily used for large state events. When leaders of foreign countries come to Ireland on official visits, banquets are hosted in Dublin castle. The presidential inaugurations take place in St. Patrick’s Hall and the results of large political referendums are officially announced in the courtyard of the castle.
The castle is a tourist hub, there are cultural events that run throughout the year and you can take a guided or a self-guided tour. The guided tours run 7 days a week including bank holidays from 9:45am with last admission at 5:15pm. The guided tour takes 60 minutes and includes a tour of the state apartments, Chapel Royal and a medieval segment.
