Derry City Walls

The magnificent 17th century walls that circle Derry are some of the best preserved in Europe. Approximately 1.5km long, 8m high and 9m thick, they are the only city walls in Ireland that survived intact. Maldron Hotel Derry is next to one of the four original gates, Butchers Gate, and our restaurant and many rooms enjoy views of the mighty walls.

Offering wonderful views in every direction, a walk around the walls is the best way to get a feel for Derry’s history and layout. The ramparts are open all year round and entry is free.

Walking Tours

If you only do one thing when you visit Derry we highly recommend joining a Martin McCrossan City Tour. Engaging, informative and entertaining the tour will give you fascinating insights and understanding of our history and people. Tours depart from outside the Foyleside Shopping Centre, less than 5 minutes from the hotel and end at the Diamond at the end of our street. It’s not necessary to book places, either buy your tickets from the guide or hotel reception in advance.
